COPY THE AUSTRALIANS AND NEW ZEALANDERS
Copy the Australians
and New Zealanders who use Galvanised or Polyester Coated
Corrugated Steel Sheets to
cover 99% of their roofs, both domestic and commercial. SLE
Cladding Ltd is able to offer a complete cure to desperate UK
owners of flat leaking roofs using profiled colour coated steel
sheets. This method is particularly suited to commercial buildings
and Porto-Cabin type offices and buildings. It can also be used on
domestic premises.
You will require the
services of a competent roofer or builder because all components
must be fitted correctly or you will be back to square one. Before
proceeding, do check that the structure of the existing flat roof
is sound.
Please be warned. There is
one draw back in the use of profiled steel sheets on
house roofs. The drumming noise of heavy rain on the roof will be
heard inside the building, even when
thick insulation is installed.
If the roof is
virtually flat it is best to create a small amount of fall by
using treated timber purlins of different depths -2", 3" ,
4", 5", 6"
etc. Spacing should be closer than normal say 3ft - 3ft 6"(1m). Secure
purlins firmly through deck to underlying beams. Insulation quilt
can be added between the purlins
The void created by
the new purlins can be filled with Quilt Insulation. This will
help reduce the sound of rain on the sheets and is particularly
recommended in the case of most Porto-cabins at the cheaper end of
the market as they are notorious for heat loss because of poor
insulation.
SLE Cladding
recommend the use of plastisol sheets, for their longer maintenance-free
life span.
Plastisol steel sheets should be in one length running from the highest
point to the gutter. SLE Cladding Ltd will make them to length.
Corrugated or Box Profile may be use.
The Aussies use
corrugated, which looks better on domestic premises. In the case
of corrugated sheets they MUST be overlapped by two corrugations. Also a bead of BUTYL SEALANT MUST be
applied between the side laps of both Box Profile and Corrugated
sheets.
Fix sheets in the normal way, i.e. every other corrugation or profile, top
and bottom, and every third corrugation/profile on intermediate
bearers.
USE Seam Stitchers at
no more than 18" centres down the side laps for a secure
watertight joint.
If the top end or
sides abuts a wall, flash with Lead or Lead Look Flashing Tape, or
SLE Cladding can make a reverse flashing to fit instead. Foam Fillers
may be needed at eaves to prevent the ingress of dust or vermin.
If need be SLE Cladding Ltd can custom make Barge Boards to lap over the edge of the sheet down on to a
side wall.
NOTE . If the roof is
in a prominent position, Local authority permission may be needed
for change of appearance.

The 2
drawings above taken from Terraplegel " Tiles on a Sheet"
manuals illustrate the above text well. On the left timber
frames have been used to give greater fall than with using
different sized wooden purlins. On the right the
conventional rafter approach.

FLAT
ROOFS on Large Residential and Commercial Premises |
|
There are specialist
companies in the UK who manufacture and install large
steel structures based on the above principals to
convert flat roofs to pitched roofs on behalf of local
authorities and large commercial companies as
illustrated in photographs. This is a
very specialist business, thus SLE Cladding Ltd does
not itself get involved. Click on
