Ridge & Barge.

In common with other shingle manufacturers, Ruberoid recommend the use of  shingles cut into strips for the ridge and barge (end flashings) See 3,4, & 6 Armourshield photos above right.

SLE Cladding Ltd offer a method that is more secure against gales with the use of Plastic Coated Steel Ridge Sheets and Barge Boards.

The standard ones are 3 metres long x 400mm girth and are available in the standard range of Plastisol colours. They can also be made to any girth width and made more attractive to bespoke designs. See Shadow Line Barge on the Flashings page.

Certain DIY chains are marketing as own brand lightweight shingles aimed at the DIY market at a very low price.

The quality of this product is not comparable with the quality of the shingles offered on this page, which is the top quality product that the professional builders use.

When purchasing shingles, some of which may be in roll form

Note the quality, thickness, quantity in pack and size and also note if there is any grit detached from the face of the shingles lying on the floor area surrounding the packs.

We never say don't buy this product, but first to ask yourself if the quality meets your requirements

General

In the UK Shingles are found on the roofs of single story timber framed and other buildings, such as bus shelters, stables, sports pavilions, beach huts, chalets, summer houses etc.

Across the Atlantic to the United States. There in a country that is subject to extremes of temperature as well as tornadoes, the majority of residential housing and commercial premises are roofed with a similar types of shingle.

Roofing shingles are suitable for use on any building, temporary or permanent, domestic or commercial, with a roof pitch of 20 degrees to vertical. 


The Product

Roofing shingle consist of a heavyweight inert glass fibre base, coated with oxidised bitumen and surfaced with coloured mineral granules. Roofing Shingles are factory cut into strip form and are available in two shapes, Square Butt or Hexagonal.

To improve adhesion of the tiles, the Square Butt Shingles have a heat sensitive bituminous strip on the top side, on the reverse side there is a polyethylene strip to prevent sticking in the pack during transit, this strip does not need to be removed. The Hexagonal products have an adhesive surface on the reverse of each tab, protected with a removable film.

When applied in accordance with the fixing instructions, Roofing Shingles are easily installed and will provide a long lasting, highly decorative , weather proof roof finish in a variety of pitched roof situations.
